84 Speed Sensor Replacement Found

Post by ChasK » Mon Jun 30, 2014 9:40 pm

For those who need a replacement speed sensor for their 84 Goldwing Aspencade I can confirm that one from an 02 VT750 will work without modification.
I took a chance on one from ebay when mine went bad and it worked, the connector was the same, wires same, only difference was the wires were a tad shorter but still plenty long enough to hook up. Oh and there was a grommet like growth near the sensor itself where it was evidently being held stationary on the Shadow.
This came after long research that said the 06 Valkyrie sensor "might" work but mods to the connector "might" have to be made. Never did hear if the other guy got his working,,, I suspect he did but who knows. The picture of the ebay sensor looked identical to mine so I took a gamble. I bet this will work on other models as well (maybe even the Valkyrie) but I only have an 84 so I cannot confirm.
As an aside, I think a forum for "definite replacements for obsolete parts" would be a good addition to this site. A place where someone needing a part can go to find replacement parts that other Wingers can testify actually do work (no speculation). If we already have that somewhere, can someone direct me to it and move this post to it.
If this post helps only one person it was worth it.

Thanks for the info- I was the guy that used a Valkrie speed pickup- had to splice in GL1200 connector- works great- but yours is better for those who may not be able to splice wiring-- Thanks1 Dennis in Anchorage

Can you please confirm that the part #37700-MBA-611 from the 02 VT750 works without modification? Thanks Tom

Hi Tom- no I cannot confirm that, but if the tires are the same diameter, and it has the same color wires, or confirm on the wiring diagrams that they both hook up the same, then it should work- As I said, I just used my original connector and the one from the vakrie worked fine- If you already have one in hand might as well try it- should work- I think most Hondas using this set up work the same- Let me know- Dennis

Thanks Dennis. I do not have one, but I thought it would be a cheaper and easier purchase than looking for the 1984 sensor. I will let you know how it turns out.

About the speedo pickup for the Aspencade- As I said, Mine didn't work when awakened from hibernation- took the entire thing apart- magnet drive shaft in pickup was stuck- was able to CAREFULLY press it apart- cleaned and lubed the heck out of it with hi temp grease- the drive washer in the front wheel also had to be shimmed to drive the speedo drive gear- works fine now- This thing needs to be lubed on a regular basis- but there are no grease fittings- The electronic pickup can be disassembled, cleaned and lubed, which Is what needs to happen probably every two years or so- because of the torrent of weather the entire system is exposed to on the front wheel. I am using a pickup from a 98? Vakrie- works good, but is 4-6 mph fast at 70 mph- referenced to the Alaska DOT radar speed signs ( every one said same error, 4-6 mph fast-) anyway, at least I have some reference to speed, and the turn signals, and auto volume for the radio works now. Actually this unit only works with speedos that are 4,000; 8,000; or 16,000 pulse per mile, so you existing speedo would have to match one of those. Also reviews on Amazon were pretty lackluster slow to update, can't get a signal, forgets, has to acquire signal (up to 2 minutes) and it isn't a real speedometer ids is a GPS enabled speedometer so it calculates your speed based on satellites and handoffs.

Thanks for the information, good find. Checked the parts fiche and the speed sensor for the '84 Aspencade and my '85 LTD are the same P/N so should be able to use this part you found.

Cheers

I found a fix for the speed sensor on a hunch. While cleaning the horn button with electronic spray cleaner, I removed the speed sensor on my '84 Aspencade and sprayed a copious amount of cleaner into the sensor. I kept spraying until the fluid ran clear (from a light brown at first), let it evaporate for a few minutes and reinstalled it. It's worked for over 2 years now.

For my 85 ltd I was able to use one from a 1500. I choose the one with the white & yellow wires. A little grinding and extension of the wires and now my bikes runs like a charm.
