Third Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering - Sep 11-15, 2019

The third annual GoldwingDocs Gathering is a go! This year it will be from Wednesday, September 11 to Sunday, September 15, 2019.

Planned in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Parkway and at the door of the Dragon, this year's Gathering will be based out of Maggie Valley, North Carolina. Our hotel is:

Block of rooms are held under "GoldWingDocs" at $89 per night if staying 3 nights, otherwise $92.75 per night. Get a roomie and the rates become half. All rooms will be held until August 1st 2019, with 72 hour cancellation.

Sept 11th to Sun the 15th,... Wouldn't that be four-nights? Would the rate be $89/night if we stay more than three nights?

Wed. Thurs, Fri, Sat - 4 nights. If you stay 3 or more nights, that is you arrive no later than Thurs, the rate is $89/night.

Bummer, we won't be able to make it to this one.

The week before we are heading down to Shreveport LA to see the "arrival" of our second grandchild . Technically the baby will enter the world towards the end of June but we can't go down there until the beginning of September.

I don't think my boss will let me take of the first two weeks of the month, just the way life is when you're an accountant. People like to see how the business is performing as soon as possible

Now that the venue has been set I will get to work on routes using Honda Trip Planner. Starting location will be the motel with rides to the Tail of the Dragon, Little Switzerland, and Wheels Thru Time Museum. If anyone has particular roads that should be incorporated into routes now is the time to request them. September will come before you know it.

Bluethunder (Brian) and I have been working on routes for the 3rd Gathering. I have completed a route that leaves the Motel, goes to Fontana Dam, then on to the Tail of the Dragon. The route then continues to Gatlinburg and back to the the motel along Rte 441 and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The total loop is about 190 miles. I have also made a route that explores the Smoky Mountain Nat Park north of Maggie Valley. It is a bit shorter at approximately 130 miles. Brian has made a route to Little Switzerland and is working on the route back to the Motel. He also has a 2 part route that goes south from Maggie Valley into Georgia and returns. Our plan is to offer numerous route of varying lengths and technical difficulties. When we have them completed we will get them posted so that everyone can open them in Honda Trip Planner and give everyone a chance to look them over and decide which ones you would like to ride. I think that the 3rd Gathering is going to be the best so far. If you haven't penciled it in on your calendar you should really consider joining us for some on the best riding east of the Mississippi.

The Cherhola Skyway is pretty much ruled out (shame) due to the distance from Maggie Valley. It was too difficult to work in Tail of the Dragaon, Fontana Dam and the Skyway in one ride. The Skyway is definitely for another day.

Hwy 215 and Hwy 28 have been included in a ride and agree that they are must rides!

Just an update...
Al and I have worked out some very nice routes which will be available in a GPX file format. This will prevent attendees from getting lost - assuming they use a GPS.

Just made my reservation arriving Sept. 11 late afternoon and checking out early Sept. 15. Looking forward to seeing the gang again. Thanks to all who put work into organizing this event. Looks like it will be the best yet. Will be posting my route in a later email if anyone wants to ride with me part of the way.

Will you be allowing any vendors at the gathering? I live in nearby Knoxville, TN and am a vendor at most GWRRA rallies east of the Mississippi. Many members have our 6x10 stock and custom motorcycle flags made for Gold Wing antennas and flagpoles.
