Bluethunder (Brian) and I have been working on routes for the 3rd Gathering. I have completed a route that leaves the Motel, goes to Fontana Dam, then on to the Tail of the Dragon. The route then continues to Gatlinburg and back to the the motel along Rte 441 and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The total loop is about 190 miles. I have also made a route that explores the Smoky Mountain Nat Park north of Maggie Valley. It is a bit shorter at approximately 130 miles. Brian has made a route to Little Switzerland and is working on the route back to the Motel. He also has a 2 part route that goes south from Maggie Valley into Georgia and returns. Our plan is to offer numerous route of varying lengths and technical difficulties. When we have them completed we will get them posted so that everyone can open them in Honda Trip Planner and give everyone a chance to look them over and decide which ones you would like to ride. I think that the 3rd Gathering is going to be the best so far. If you haven't penciled it in on your calendar you should really consider joining us for some on the best riding east of the Mississippi.
Is there any type of schedule for what days what rides will be taking place? I have never attended a Goldwing Gathering and am considering attending. I have been riding a Goldwing for the past 10 years and am on my 3rd Goldwing and think it would be nice to ride with other Goldwing riders. Unfortunately I have a limited availability and will be able to arrive on the 11th around noon and have to head back either Saturday evening or Sunday morning. I will be traveling 500 miles to attend the event and want to be sure to get the most out of the trip. Any help would be appreciated.

To those wondering about the planned rides, I will get with Brian (Bluethunder) and see what he has completed. I have a 190 mile ride that heads east on the BRP to Cherokee then a loop that takes us to the Tail of the Dragon and on to Gatlinburg before continuing to the BRP and back to the MV resort. Another route that I have completed is about 130 miles that goes north out of MV and explores the Great Smoky Mountain Nat Park. Brian has completed a route that heads east and north along the BRP to Little Switzerland. He also has a route that heads south into Georgia before returning to MV. By early next week we will plan what ride will be on each day. I am thinking the ride to Tail of the Dragon should be on Friday simply because I am sure the Dragon has heavy riders on the week end.

From the Honda Trip Planner website:

"Is My GPS Compatible With Honda Trip Planner?

The Honda Trip Planner is compatible with advanced GPS units that have the ability to record and display trips using GPX files. If you have a 2012 Honda Gold Wing or newer, your GPS unit is compatible with the Honda Trip Planner."

My GoldWing is a 2010. Am I SOL?

No. You can download the GPX file. You will need to read your owners manual or search this site for instructions if you don't know how to do it.

Just a note to let everyone know our thinking:
We have quite a few routes planned. The decision to ride which one, in the past, is determined by the number of attendees, weather and skill level of riders. Rest assured that every route is fun with wonderful views. Satisfaction guarrenteed 🤗

I don't think there is a way to download a GPX file into a pre-2012 on board Garmin. I searched Google, YouTube and this forum. So if any of you have any specific information I am all ears.

I am currently planning to email the GPX to an iPhone mounted on the "handlebars" and open it in the Google Maps app. I still need to test this approach however, so if you have a GPX lying around that you can email me, I can test this theory and post the instructions.

Thanks

msbeach@unaprogrammer.com and just attach the gpx file.

For what it's worth, I would think that we would want to do the dragon on Thursday and avoid the Friday crowds. But I'll ride what ever way things are set up.

Thanks. This helped me find out that the Google Maps app on the iPhone does not, in fact, accept gpx imports. Only Maprika and Gaia so far.

Now I'm looking into file converters gpx --> kml.

Well I sure don't have to travel far to attend. I am building a house 4 miles down 276 from the Hotel. My wife and I have traveled every little 2 lane road within 300 miles of Waynesville/Maggie Valley. I agree with the earlier post that Dragons Tail trip would be better on Thursday as Friday it gets really crowded. The restaurant attached to the Hotel has a good buffet on Thursday night and just about the best fried chicken or chicken strips around.
