detdrbuzzard,

Thanks, I would guess you did the Lake Superior Circle SS1K. That was my first IBA ride.

Working on series for MN Hwy 1 from Lake Superior to Ely, another great motorcycle road.

My brother and I rode the Gunflint Trail back in 2011. (I rode to both Grand Marais, Michigan, and Grand Marais, Minnesota, that summer). We stayed a couple days in a cabin in Grand Marais, MN. The Trail was not that impressive to us. First is the fact that you see almost nothing but trees for most of the Trail. Very, very few places where you see lakes or open areas.
When leaving Grand Marais, the Trail does climb some steep hills and during that ascent there are great views of the town and Lake Superior. But once you crest the top, from then on, not much to see except a wall of trees.
I do like trees, I majored in Forestry in college, but they are not that scenic except in the fall color season.

Second is the fact that, at least in 2011, the road was in very poor condition. It was extremely rough and broken up. It beat us and our bikes up constantly. I sure hope the state has done some major repairs or figure on getting shaken apart.

We did enjoy the area. In Grand Marais visit the World’s Greatest Donut shop-they are. Also the Blue Water Cafe, the local fish market where you can actually dine on fresh caught Lake Superior whitefish. Lip smacking great meal! And be sure to visit Grand Portage National Monument- a restored 1700s fur trading fort, up the road from Grand Marais, just before the Canadian border.
And, riding the north shore of Lake Superior is a super great ride! Scenery is spectacular! We enjoyed our trip there very much, but the Gunflint Trail was a big disappointment.

The condition of the pavement does change section by section. If you don't push the speed, the surface will not be an issue. It is the curves and near wilderness conditions that are the appeal of the Gunflint.

I sure hope the state has done some road repairs on the Gunflint since I rode it in 2011! I know you live near there and many of us feel protective or possessive of our local, favorite roads. But back in 11, that road was badly torn up with most of it being crumbled blacktop. Let me tell you, we definitely kept our speed down! I was honestly concerned that we would start having bike parts breaking off. The fact that it is a wild and remote wilderness, although that’s a good thing, made it that much more concerning. We didn’t want a breakdown miles from anywhere.

The road HAS to be improved by now, that was over 8 years ago. If it hasn’t, it’ll be a a Jeep Trail by now. But, the Arrowhead area of Minnesota is truly a great place to ride, IMO. I do enjoy it all. I do plan to be up that way again next summer.
