Fourth Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering - Sep 2020

Post by jbaviera » Sun Oct 13, 2019 8:07 am

With so much chatter for the next Gathering, I figured I'd start this thread.

So far, the Wise/Tazewell, VA areas have been suggested for rides on the "Back of the Dragon", and "Claw of the Dragon", where a bit of interest has been shown.

What say you?

Any other suggestions?

Checking on motels in the Tazwell area and in the Marion/Wytherville areas.
Will have something definite first week in November.

Date may change to August for better weather. But pencil in for the Claw and Back of the Dragon! Looks like fun riding.

Might be a bit too much money ---
But I stayed here in June of 2019 --
It was excellent -- North end of the Dragon Back
Holiday Inn Express
180 Clay Dr,
Pounding Mill, VA 24637

Don't ask -- just DO !

The Back is great - 32 miles of smiles -
It CAN cause a problem for inexperienced riders going too fast -
Be sure to ride your OWN RIDE -
If your fellow riders are faster -- let them go --
It's only 30 miles to the meet up spot in either direction ;)

Ohhh -- I am looking forward to this (hope I can make it)

Tazwell Va and the Back of the Dragon are great. Another option is the Birmingham area around Barber's Motor Sport Museum. If you've not been there it is well worth seeing.

It appears the popular vote is the Tazewell/Marion, VA area for the next gathering so I want to throw a great BBQ restaurant into the list. Check out Wolfe's BBQ in Marion (https://www.wolfes-bbq.com/). This is a must! Over the last few years our riding group from MD and PA route a trip so that we can stop at Wolfe's for lunch. Some of the best beef brisket and ribs I have ever eaten, and the fries are great too.

We make sure to stop at the gift shop for the Back of the Dragon to visit the very friendly folks there. The new 5000 sq ft store with gift shop, brewery, food truck, and lounging area is scheduled to be open early summer 2020. (https://www.backofthedragon.com/)

Typically we stay in Wytheville, VA, but there are local and chain hotels scattered all over the area. Tazewell is a small town so not much lodging.

Looking forward to the 2020 Gathering. The previous two that I attended have been most enjoyable!

Em

I spent the better part of a week in that area, riding The Back, The Claw, 421, and the great roads in the area. We stayed at Hungry Mother State Park. Tent sites, RV sites and a good selection of cabins. I shared a two bedroom cabin-with full kitchen and bath with two others Besides being equipped with two sets of bunkbeds in one of the bedrooms, there was a sleeper/couch too. All of us were very comfortable. There's also a nice beach there for swimming and sunbathing("bird"watching) if you want a break.
The 32 miles between Marion and Tazwell are great!

One of the "problems" we had on the 3rd Gathering was the weather. For the past three years we kind of "pushed" the envelope and last year we got bit. Mornings was great for riding but afternoons saw rain every day. Weather also forced us to cancel the Little Switzerland route and instead we went to Gatlinburg. And of course, we got soaked on I40 coming back to the motel.

So, for the 4th Gathering, the date of the ride will be pushed up into August for better weather. Hot weather shouldn't be a problem as we will be at altitude where it will be cooler. So it is a bit of a trade-off. The ride dates are August 19 - 23. This date was picked as not to "jam up" family get-togethers that are planned around Labour Day.

I narrowed down to a selection of three motels - all with pools! In August, this time, will be open! I need to finalize accommodation details and group prices. It looks like we will be based in the Wytheville VA area (off the junction of I77 and I81) - not far from Tazewell/Marion. Wytheville was chosen so we can take advantage of some excellent routes to the north(east).

Make sure you enter the dates onto your calendar and stay tuned for more details!

Brian, I like the timing, I like the area. Good choices. Looking forward to making my reservation... IF... my wife is planning a trip for us to the east coast of Va sometime next summer but I'm hoping a bit earlier than our 4th Annual Gathering. :D

I'm interested. Anything dealing with the Dragon and I'm in. I'll be heading to the tail in May with my daugther for her first slaying of the Dragon. :D

Sounds like a nice place. Wish it wasn’t coast to coast for me. Maybe when ones a little closer I can partake.
