Fifth Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering: August 25 - 29, 2021, Wise, VA

Post by emwarrenfeltz »

Here it is, January 1, 2021, and we need to get some planning for a 5th Gathering. 2021 has to be a better year for getting together although those that attended the Fourth Gathering had a great time! From what I have seen so far, no date or destination has been defined, so get those ideas, locations, and dates together and add them to this topic.

Maybe by Gathering time, Covid will be under control, vaccinations will be completed and restaurants and lodging will be back to 'normal'.

Looking forward to meeting new friends, renewing friendships with past participants, and getting out there and riding together. Happy New Year.

Em

Em, you beat me to it!

Sitting here in what no one would call the frozen tundra of Long Island, NY, I was thinking now is the time to start planning for the 5th Annual Gathering.

Over the past couple of years, members have submitted various places to ride. Far too many to decide. This year the ride will take place in the Appalachian Mountains (aka Appalachian Backroads) area centered around Wise Virginia. This allows the opportunity to explore several states (WV, VA, KY and TN). Lots of good roads and wonderful restaurants abound.

The date of the ride will be the same as last year - 2nd week prior to Labor Day. It is best to keep the same time each year so members can plan accordingly - without surprises. This is common practice amongst ride organizers. Besides, it is prior to the start of the rainy season. Last year we saw minimal precipitation compared to years prior.

So, for planning purposes today:
Ride Date August 25-29, 2021
Area: Appalachian Mountains centered around Wise, VA

Any suggestions regarding favourite roads, restaurants and places to stop/see would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Are we thinking about 2 lodging locations this year so we can ride a broader area?

Not for this ride. We will be trying this concept out in July on the Pilage and Plunder Ride in MI and WI. If successful we can certainly try it next year.

Isn't this the same basic area/region where the gathering was last year?

EDIT: I looked back and they've all been in this area. The first one was up in Ohio, but that still isn't too far from this region. I have no complaints since I'm in the middle, near Dallas, but has there been any discussions about having it in the western half of the country?

I second that, or at least a gathering somewhere toward the middle of the country... Our western members have a two to four day drive to reach the event, depending on how far west they are coming from....

Seattle is 2600 miles from Wise VA, it's 1300 for me.

I suppose one could argue that everywhere in the region is nearby as it has been held within 4-8 hours riding distance from each location. There are so many excellent roads in the multi-state area that it could take years to ride them all. Because of the large number of routes, each yearly event has not had duplication of roads. This allows riders to discover and visit new locations/areas. Events that ride the same basic roads gets boring and we want each ride to be a memorial unique event.

The Gathering has always been an "Eastern" ride. There has been some interest albeit little, to have a "Western" ride. I leave the planning of that event to someone else. By all means someone can step up to the plate and plan such a ride. It would need to be named Western Gathering (or something else) to prevent confusion with this event.

There is no registration per se. A room reservation will be required once a suitable motel is selected. That information will be posted in the coming months.

We would love to meet you and I can guarantee you will throughly enjoy yourself. BTW, it doesn't matter what you ride, just make sure to attend!

I’m up for any of the Appalachia area since the furthest east we’ve done so far was our recent Natchez trip. I also didn’t intend to start any east vs west war over locations. I should’ve known better after seeing that after four all being eastern that this had to have come up before. Shame on me for that.

The wife and I are planning to try a Colorado trip in late May or early June. I have the PTO to also do the Gathering, but it would require me to take two weeks off to be able to get to and from. I’ll see how she feels about me going alone plus I’m not sure she has the PTO time for both anyway. If she’s okay with me going alone I’ll start working on coverage for my shifts I’ll be gone early in the Spring. However, like some folks, I might not know for sure until only a few weeks before the Gathering.

Hi all,

I am looking forward to the gathering this year as last year was the first one I have missed due to the border being closed. I have missed all the good friends I have met in the previous rides. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Let's hope the border is open. I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
