renting bikes while on holidays or in other countries

Post by Iaustin » Mon Dec 01, 2014 9:38 pm

while in cozumel mexico we rented a hd heritage classic for the day cruizing along coast and stopping at different beaches, rented from eagle rider, couldnt get a wing ,but im sure it was better than a scooter.we are going to negril jamaica in feb was wondering has anyone rented a bike there or gone on a tour there,i think a tour might be best for myself as it may take a little while to get used to driving on opposite of what im used to.any other warm spots you may have been and rented or toured on bikes

Does a scooter in Bermuda count? We rode around on this for a week - including me riding it through Hurricane Bertha in 2008, through rainwater 6 inches deep and 80 mph winds. That was fun!

Most of the Caribbean Islands including Jamaica, the last time I was down there, have little 200cc scooters that carry two people with ease. I have done many miles on them and them make for a great way to get around the islands.

I would be very cautious about traveling anywhere outside the compound while in Jamaica. The laws are very different. Traffic laws are almost non-existent and the police are very corrupt. It is not safe to travel the island on your own. A small trip with a group into the city for lunch & drinks might be OK, but you should use caution wherever you travel on the island.
I have been to the Sunsplash twice and a cruise ship stop last year. Although things have gotten better in the past few years, Jamaican Posses run the local areas and clubs. We tried to hire a cab to go record shopping in Kingston and our driver refused, telling us we wouldn't get back alive. He also wouldn't take us club hopping in MoBay at night. He advised us to remain safe and party on the hotel property. Jamaica is very beautiful, lovely beaches and has an extremely poor population.
Our cab driver also told us of a strange law - we never knew whether or not he was joking with us on this one- if you beep your horn before you crash in to someone/something you are not considered to be at fault. ???
Don't want to spoil your trip, just want you to be aware of what you might face outside the resort property. Good luck!

I haven't been there is a number of years, but Jamaica has always been a tough place. I would recommend Puerto Rico as a good alternative. I lived there for a while back in the late 80's and really enjoyed it. Beautiful Island with beautiful people and great beaches and great diving.

Why rent when you can take your own bike on a cruise with you. We were on a cruise last March from Bayonne, NJ to the Caribbean on the Royal Caribbean "Explorer or the Seas". There was a charter operator who had 16 motorcycles on the ship. Here is the deal: You bring your own bike to the ship, keep it in the cargo area, at each stop on the cruise they had a pre-arranged excursion with a police escort around the island. The operator paid for the tour leader, escort, gas and other expenses including permits, etc.

Here is what threw me: the cost was only $300 per person over the cost of the cruise.

We talked to many of the people in the group and they said it was great. The ship was very accommodating, letting the bikes get off the ship first and loading up first after the excursion. There were mostly Harleys but not all. On St. Maarten, they even had a combined beach day with the motorcycle club from the Island.

I will see if I can find the business card from the tour operator but it should be easy to google it.

I found the info for the above post. It is ETA Motorcyle Cruises.

I saw that ETA also associates with MSC. MSC is a great cruise line with superb service and an excellent 1st Class concierge cabin area. I have done Jam Cruise with them several times and highly recommend them. The boats are new and spotless, service is way above & beyond and they really know how to show you a good time. Wish I could take the sled on Jam Cruise this year, but docking times are short and you're up all night, so one ends up sleeping in port.

That's what the Sea Days are for; catching up on your rest. I can tell you that the bikers on our cruise were having a great time. They all tended to be together on the ship after their excursions and were very into the party scene. They all tended to wear their motorcycle regalia on the boat so they were easy to pick out. We had some good conversations with them and found out more about ETA. Great bunch of people.

Some were from as far as Montreal, Canada. They told us that ETA tries to get on cruises that have as many stops as possible per cruise so that they can maximize their time for excursions.

I can't imagine a better way to cruise as well as save money when you are off the ship. I would much rather ride my own bike than spend up to $100 per person to do an excursion run by the ship.
