I have my wife's Burgman 400 apart right now doing some maintenance (new CV sliders, belt, oil, etc.). I thought I would post a video that I took of the CV transmission in operation, just because it's pretty cool to see how it varies the ratio as the speed changes:

The front pulley is connected to the engine crankshaft. The rear pulley is connected to a centrifugal clutch. As the engine speed increases, the clutch engages, which connects the rear wheel to the rear pulley through a reduction gearbox drive.

As the engine speed increases, weights in the front pulley cause the pulley space to close up, forcing the belt outward. This pulls the spring-loaded rear pulley space to open up, forcing the belt inward. Effectively, this changes the ratio gradually, without any gear shifts.

Back when I had my Honda Ruckus I had the CV transmission cover off and was watching it work just like in your video, I knew how these types of transmissions worked but had never seen one in action. I was expecting the centrifugal clutch to be on the drive pulley end, not the driven pulley end, but quickly realized it wouldn't work like that because the belt has to be always moving in order to move up and down the pulley diameters, say like when you're coming to a stop and it's adjusting the ratios back to a low gear ratio.

I was thinking the exact same thing about the clutch location. I ran it up both to check my work (I had just replaced the CV sliders and belt), as well as watch it function just for curiosity's sake. :)

Yup, we used to carry a spare belt in our snowmobiles. Not great being stranded 20 miles in the bush with a broken belt!

I've been running scooters for close to ten years now. That's how almost all scooters deliver their power to the wheels. It's a pretty good system. One notable exception is the very expensive to repair(don't ask how I know) system used in the Burgman 650. When that one goes, most bikes get parted out. BTW, it's no less fun having a belt break on a scooter, being miles from anything either!

This set up is pretty durable. I run a John Deer S690 combine in the fall. This system is what supplies the entire machine, I think theses are around 500 HP machines. I could be wrong but it sure looks like the same set up.

Yup, that CV system in the 650 (and its history) is what ruled out the 650 for me straight away.

Difference with being stranded on a scooter with a broken belt, is that you're usually on a road, and someone will be along, eventually. Stranded on a snowmobile...you could be way in the bush, 60 miles away from the closest road! At least where we used to run...
