LED Trailer Lighting

Post by cbowers83 » Mon Jul 17, 2017 9:02 am

I have a harbor freight trailer that I tow behind my Goldwing 1500. Have a cracked tail light. I was wanting to replace it with LED lights, but I am not sure if it will flash properly with my motorcycle electrical system. I have a trailer isolation panel in my bike. Has anyone had any experience with LED trailer lights?

If you have an isolator, then it doesn't matter what kind of light you have in the trailer, it won't affect how the flashing occurs.

I have led lights on both my tow behinds, and the isolator was the trick. It enables the trailer to have any lights you want to use, as WingAdmin mentioned.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

BTW
HF has a recall on all their trailers from 2006-2016 build dates. The incandescent lights they came with didn't meet DOT requirements and they will send you a set of LED light kit with wiring harness free, even if you bought it used. They are required to do this. No you can't get them from the stores.
Google search harbor fr trailer light recall. There is a card they want to send you to fill out and return to them. I was able to do it over the phone as I was about to leave on a trip before they would have sent just the card. Still took a couple weeks.
LED trailer lights won't effect flash rate on your bike if the bike lights flash properly already.

BTW, I have a tag-along with LED lights (the recall sent me a back up set). On my 02 1800 I had no issues using LED trailer lights without an isolator, they draw very little current and did not impair the 1800's incandescent OEM lights on board (they were the ballast needed for signal flasher). With my modifications on board I was having space issues for installing an Isolator, but I'd prefer having one... everything in time. I've since changed out the flasher unit and converted everything to LED short of my Headlights (and those just arrived).
