2018 Goldwing Reverse

Post by woodyshoemaker »

The reverse has gone out on my 2018 Honda Goldwing, six speed. You can hear the motor running, trying to engage, but it only slightly engages. Yet, after it gets warmed up it sort of backs up a little bit. Something is very wrong inside! 12,000 miles. Help.

It won't engage properly at all?

I occasionally have this issue with my 2016, but disengaging the reverse, then moving a few inches, then re-engaging it has solved the issue each time so far. It seems like it just doesn't catch something right 100% of the time.

T'was me, I would have that back to the dealership lickety split. Either something is not adjusted right, or something is broken, OR they did not do their due diligence setting the bike up and showing you stuff. Your warranty covers this.

Did you get the reverse issue resolved? I have a 2018 (Non DCT) Tour, with 24K miles. I have experienced this twice now. Once @ 6890 miles and again now. The first remedy was a “Cable adjustment “. I called American Honda in Torance and they had no knowledge of issues.

Previous generation, cable adjustment was the fix. Don't know about the new ones, but it should still be under warranty.

Yes, my previous 2003 1800 never had a problem with reverse up till 150K when I traded. The local “Honda Mechanic” adjusted cable slack @ 6890 miles. The problem pops up totally without warning. On 2018, I’m not sure what drives the reverse action. I have a non DCT, so I believe it’s different from this model.

My service man said linkage was dirty. Cleaned up, adjusted, back in service with no issues. Go figure!

In addition: I have previously owned over 90 motorcycles (so far!) Mostly Yamahas (2 V-max), Kawasaki 2stroke triple,2Ninjas 11, ZX12, to name just a few. My Dad drag raced @irwindale in the 60’s. Hooked me early on. Overall Honda has been hands down the most reliable, Bulletproof motors for me. My 2003 1800 was just that: God I miss that bike. Big fast take no prisoners. The new wing is gonna have some quinks to work out I know. 1 Year and 25K miles later, no regrets. My wife my not agree but she digs Palomar/Julian rides with twisties. It’s a very addictive motorcycle.

I find that taking up the slack bit helps to engage it more. Turn the other way, and it won't engage at all kinda thing. Look into the plastic dial thing sort of behind right leg or under right thigh or the right side frame pocket? Occasionally, I find that the plastic dial stop can be loosened, so periodic check would help...?
