Wax on black plastic

Post by Redwing822 »

I was a little sloppy waxing last Summer, and got some paste wax on some textured black plastic pieces. No big deal, I thought; it’ll buff off just like it does on the painted plastic surfaces, right? Not quite.

Anyone have any tips on getting wax off?

First, I would clean it off with Simple Green or similar cleaner and a toothbrush, then pick one of these to rejuvenate it.

I can't recall which one I used on the handlebar controls, cover and trim on my 93 (just sold).

I did the same thing on my pickup truck - slopped paste wax on a piece of textured flat black plastic. An Artgum eraser works like magic to remove the dried wax. Just rub it gently on the affected area and watch the wax disappear.

A very simple and inexpensive item that will remove wax pretty nicely is Dawn dishwashing soap mixed with some water. Wax is a petroleum product and Dawn just takes grease out of your way. A professional detailer gave me this tip, and when I wanted to use one of those synthetic bonding coating agents on my car, the Dawn took all the wax off first so it worked real well. A toothbrush to scrub with wouldn't hurt if the plastic you speak of is porous.
