Honda has filed a patent to add adaptive cruise control to the new GL1800, a feature that has shown up on a couple other motorcycles as well.
It's a bit tricky to do on motorcycles. The radar needs to go through a flat panel - it can go through plastic, but the plastic has to be smooth and flat, and there aren't a lot of smooth, flat places on a motorcycle. Honda has picked a spot between the headlights for it to go:
The patent talks about isolating the radar sensor as well as the bodywork in front of it from vibration, as both would affect the radar signal. The transceiver antenna is mounted on an extension of the fairing and headlight stays, which are bolted to the frame. The gap between the antenna and the flat plastic panel in front of it is to be filled with a sponge-like damping material that does not affect the radar signal.
Honda has also filed patents for the Africa Twin, showing an ultrasonic detector facing backwards, to warn of approaching vehicles from behind, but this is not reflected in the Goldwing patent.

Re: Adaptive Cruise Control coming to the GL1800
Wonder how long it'll take for someone to replace that painted plastic panel with a chromed one, blocking the radar signal and hosing the entire system?
I like pie.

My son is going to enjoy it for many years to come.
