Oil change interval, 2018+ Goldwing Tour DCT

Post by Biker Bobby »

A Honda dealer mechanic told me that the 'oil change' interval is 6,400 kms (4,000 miles). My manual indicates 12,800kms (8,000miles)... who is correct?

either is good,

if you use full Synthetic as recommended, then 8,000 miles is good, but I only change my 1800's oil annually using Rotella T6 in 5w40 full synthetic.

it still looks clean when changed, and it don't use a drop of oil in between.
and it is still very young, at 118,000 miles for a 2002

Honda has been going with an 8,000 mile/12 month oil change interval for decades.
Honda dealers want to see you more often to make more money.

Your choice, but technically the owners manual is "correct".
What others feel is correct is different than the fact of the manufacturers recommended interval, with the understanding that the recommendation is for the max interval, not minimum.

Change more often if you choose, but there is no proof than changing at 4,000 miles is "better" than doing it every 8,000 miles.
The only caveat to this is the owners manual probably has a disclaimer that if ridden in dusty or harsh conditions (sometimes a list of what defines "harsh conditions" is included) that the service interval should be shorter.

All that said, I personally do a 5,000 mile interval.
Why, nothing more than it makes it real easy for me to know when the next change is due.

I'm with blupupher. I currently have just under 2K on mine and I plan to do the first two changes at 2500, then 5,000 and every 5,000 thereafter. I'll send the first three out for analysis (Blackstone) and if all looks good I won't worry after that unless....There are always exceptions.

on my car, I sent in a sample of the oil at 15,000 miles.

it came back with flying colors, good to go.
