Drop Guards for 2020 Goldwing

Post by dclinton »

I do a lot of cone pattern practice, and have found out the hard way that the tip over protection on the 2018+ hardly serves that purpose. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a fabricator that customizes functional drop guards / crash bars for this type bike. Thanks.

Might check with Traxxion Dynamics, thought I saw on YT they were working on something along those lines.

Hi dclinton,

Did you find anything?
I was looking earlier this week, but drew a blank.
I noticed though, while reading through an article on here about tying down your Wing for trailering, that there is a pretty substantial-looking steel crash loop behind the plastic cover for the fog lamp on each side. After seeing this, I stopped looking.

Hello. I believe the drop guards Traxxion Dynamics is working with apply only when the bike is not moving. I'm looking for something that is effective if the bike tips over at very low speeds, such as when doing tight maneuver cone patterns (less than 5mph). The engine guard i currently have installed works well for the front, but the saddlebags are basically unprotected in the event of a slow speed tip over.

Even the Honda guards get pretty messed up if you are moving when you go down. If the Traxxion product is like the typical chrome round tube, you can always add something like a frame slider to them for slow speed work. These are Delrin shaft collars that could be clamped in place.

I was very disappointed to see the 2018 without much of anything to protect the plastics. Sure, there are sturdy drop guards under the plastic, but that can make a simple tip over a pretty expensive mistake. I had a ZX-10 when they first came out before frame sliders were a thing. My neighbor hit the rear tire and pushed it off the side stand and it fell over. It was 1/4 of the purchase price to make it right again. :o :o :o

BEWARE there are some known issues with slow speed drills and the DCT. The technique required is much different than you might think. Honda has sometimes stepped up to replace a failed trans, but not always. This can probably be fixed via firmware but that hasn't happened yet.

There was a post a while back regarding slow speed drills with a DCT. After a failure at about 10,000 miles Honda rebuilt the transmission and when it failed a second time Honda told the owner that he was "driving too slow" and would not cover the cost a second time. I scanned but could not find the post. Just letting you know incase you weren't aware of the issue. I have found the best way to avoid that type of damage is not to fall. Easier said than done. Good luck.
