6th gen GL1800 engine seizes, UBS bolt breaks
Apparently there are a few 2018s and 2019s that have had a failing bolt that locks up the engine. One rider says his repair included over 30 parts which included transmission gears, a new case, and the broke bolt. The symptoms include a small click, oil light comes on, and when trying to restart, just a click is heard. Reported is a hardening issue with the bolt. One guy supplied these pictures.
I beleive the repair below did not include a new case.

5th gens use a similar bolt in the same area, and I beleive it is bolt #10 in the fishe below. I also see that the part number supersedes. Part numbers change for a couple of reason. First there might be an issue with a parts supplier. Another can be because something was learned or discovered. Something learned or discovered requires a engineering change with the bolt. If true, that means that it is not a "bad batch" issue, but a design flaw that will likly affect many more. If the part number changed because of a supplier issue ... well there can be many issues there ... ie part being made wrong ... deliveries always late ... etc.

Ouch. That's a nasty one. I hadn't seen mention of this one before.GoldWingrGreg wrote: ↑Sun Oct 02, 2022 7:26 am 5th gens use a similar bolt in the same area, and I beleive it is bolt #10 in the fishe below. In our hood all is good and same with the shop. I lost internet for a day at the shop. We had a nice 30mph wind that brought down dead branches, and we got about 2" of rain. How about you ... I'm not sure what part of the country you live.

It appears that my 2019 Goldwing is one of the motorcycles affected by this issue.
I am waiting to hear what Honda is going to do about it.
My Goldwing has been broken down for over 2 months now, and I'm hoping for some good news.

Wow. With the amount of damage, and the metal that went through that engine, I'd be insisting on a new engine. Do let us know how they make it right for you.

Re: 6th gen GL1800 engine seizes, UBS bolt breaks
So to update, Honda has agreed to step up and cover the cost of all the repairs, parts & labour.
We are waiting on parts to complete the job, but no rush since its winter and therefore no riding in my area.

What do they consider "repair"? With the amount of metal in that engine that will have gone everywhere, I would be pretty much insisting on a new engine.

Re: 6th gen GL1800 engine seizes, UBS bolt breaks
Just so everyone is on the same page, there is no such thing as a "new engine." If you look in the parts fishe, there is no such thing as a new engine ... there is no such thing as a crate motor. Required parts are ordered, and the engine is assembled by a tech.
However, just because "new engines" are not available to Honda dealers, repair shops, or owners trying to buy one, it does not mean that Honda will not supply one, when justified and when doing a waranty repair. Hopefully, in this situation, Honda is supplying a new "crate motor." In the past on 5th gens, occasionally, I've heard of them doing just that.
Basically, you and I cannot buy 5th and 6th gen crate motors. To us and dealers there is not even a part number available for one. Crate motors are reserved only for Honda to send out on their descretion.

NEVER say you are in no hurry! a service manager may put you back just one time, but that may be the time they are alerted to a backorder, then they forget and when you call in spring, now in a hurry, they tell you the great news! you miss srping. you miss summer, you miss fall, because someone else got your parts because you were not in a hurry.

Re: 6th gen GL1800 engine seizes, UBS bolt breaks
Is yours all back togeather and are you riding again ???
I see Honda picked up the cost for the repair, but was yours repaired under a Honda 3yr warranty, or a Honda extended warranty, or was it out of warranty and repaired with Honda's goodwill ???

Re: 6th gen GL1800 engine seizes, UBS bolt breaks
Yes, my Goldwing is back and running 100% again.
The bike had been out for warranty for just over 2 months when this happened, and Honda fixed it as a "Goodwill" gesture.
Surely Honda does not want bad publicity on their benchmark motorcycle.

When it happened to me, it was a sudden loud rattling noise, and the engine seized immediately.

Re: 6th gen GL1800 engine seizes, UBS bolt breaks
Can you elaborte on when that occured ??? For example, did that occure when starting up cold, while idling at a stop light, running the slab in 6th at 70mph, when coming to a stop, etc ??? The other ones that failed, may or may not have failed under the same conditions.

I was out riding for about 1/2 hour, so engine was hot. I was in 3rd gear riding normally, and I applied the brakes and downshifted hard because some moron decided to pull out in front of me, and all of a sudden the loud rattling noise happened and the engine seized.

Thank you ... knowing the conditions helps. How long did the rattling occur before the seizing of the engine ... or was it pretty much instant ???pitmax wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 7:36 am I was out riding for about 1/2 hour, so engine was hot. It happened all at once, the loud rattling and engine seized, and bike just rolled to a stop since the transmission was gone.
