Tach reacts slowly
The tach on my 78 GL1000 reacts really slow to motor revs. It's been a long time since I had a bike with a mechanical tach and I don't remember them being this slow. Is this normal for older wings? If not, can I shoot a little lube up into it or something like that?

Re: Tach reacts slowly
I have no experience with a 1978 GL but if it is like other mechanical tachs, remove the cable and clean and lubricate it with Lock-Ease or similar graphite lubricant. That may help.

Re: Tach reacts slowly
Generally not the cable. It's usually dried lube on the needle bushings inside the tach. You have to pry off the chrome ring to separate it and lube it .Doesn't took pretty crimping it back, but it is functional.

Thanks for the responses. Went to a bike bone-yard yesterday and found a set of foot pegs and managed to get a full center stand assembly; now to have it all welded back, so all that's left for the moment is getting a shift lever.
I'll try some electrical cleaner and see if if breaks loose before I bend up the chrome. I'll let you know.

Last resort would be to let Pistol Pete clean them up for you.
