hondaline luggage keys

Post by philmckinley » Sat Jun 09, 2012 12:41 pm

I bought a set of hondaline luggage (saddlebags) from a '79 wing on ebay and the seller said that a locksmith had made a key for them. The key worked on the luggage locks, but not the lock which removes the bags from the frame. I took them to a local locksmith and had a key duplicated hoping that it would work the frame lock. It didn't. I took the luggage in today (attached to the frame rails) and the locksmith said the key wasn't the correct blank. He tried to find the correct blank first in a book, then by trial and error over about 45 minutes. He got one of the keys to unlock one of the frame locks by a bit of jiggling, etc. The locks are all stamped with the number "436" which is the code for the key but the Honda dealer couldn't help (they sent me to that locksmith).
Does anyone know how I can get a key cut for my bags using that code, or where I can get a blank key that is made to fit Hondaline luggage? Thanks for any help.

Some one in another thread had a similar problem and this link was given:

I got an email back from the first company and responded, they sent me what they think is the # for the blank.
In the meantime, I inspected the bag and frame which I couldn't unlock and discovered that the last time it was attached it was done improperly, causing a bind on the lock. I unbound it and the key worked.
I keep looking at how the frames mount and think I'll have to move the turn signals, but I have a rack with signal mounts that I think will work. The bags cleaned up great.

I am currently working on exactly ther same problem. I have removed the locks themselves. They come off by taking the 4 phillips screws out of the curved section inside the boxes under the foam square. By the way my key also is number 436, AND ... it does not undo the attachment locks.
I was at the locksmiths this afternoon. He says... 1- check e-bay (neg), 2- check the dealer (tomorrow), 3- keep looking hoping to get lucky or have them rebuilt (big money, lots of time and need a good smith). Mine is off my '78 . Systems overlap. My 79 is different (vetter).
Anyways if I come up with a solution or part number or anything, I'll post a reply. I'd appreciate the same if you get anything.
Murray.

I have these kind of bags and have to use 3 different keys to put them on and unlock/lock the latches.

One of the keys is a little bit longer than the other. If you find a maker of keys maybe we could find a maker of the locks and latches for replacement. I'd like to have one key to rule them all.

This is where I got my key blanks from. Honda MC dealer wanted over $10 each for them. Just a little over $6 US from this guy.

I have had a good bit of luck recently. At the suggestion of one locksmith I applied, (several times), a shot of graphite solution. All three locks have unsiezed. One is badly damaged from someone before me, trying to free it up with a large screw driver. At any tare he also had an old (like new) lock of the same type. Different number but he has made a key for it. So worse case, I am at two keys. I will try that $6 guy for a couple of new blanks though. Thanx for the help guys, and I will post back the final on the locks. If my third lock is repairable, someone might be able to use his other lock. I think the number was #434.

I do not see a "final on the locks". I'm in the same situation as these folks were. I have a single, original key (#431) for my Hondaline luggage/saddlebags for my 1981 Honda GL1100. Where can I find blanks and what is the part number? I am relatively sure if I can find blanks, my local locksmith can grind them to match my original.

NOTE: the link to that $6 guy no longer works.

Same here.

I even went thru some older threads and found a locksmith in Maine who supposedly can make the keys.

I sent him an email two days ago and have heard nada back.

He still in business as his website is still up.

'shop@allmotorcyclekeys.com'

No idea why he hasn't responded.

The web site appears broken, but it does show a phone number:
Can't find your make and model? I may still have it in stock. Email me or call me at (207) 230-4667 to inquire.

The web site works fine for me here:

Edit: Yes, I see what you mean. The site works in some areas and not in others. The site links appear broken for makes and models. His top links still work.

Is the issue that you guys know what the key blank is, but can't find it? If that's the case I can check with an old timey lock smith by me who copied my ignition key, just let me know what the blank number is.

Some people claimed to have found the correct blanks but they have never said which they are.

SnoBrdr is correct. The single key I have to open my Hondaline Luggage (and remove it from the luggage frame on my 1981 GL1100) is #431. However, I do not know which key blank to use/order. I only have the one key, and it is somewhat twisted and mangled. But, it still works.

I will call the Locksmith in Maine (207.230.4667) and see if that leads to a solution. I'll post what I find out either way.

Well, no joy yet! :) 207.230.4667 rings through to the voicemail of "Jim at Absolute Lock and Key". However, his mailbox is full and will not accept any messages. Sigh! I did not think finding a key blank would be this much of an adventure. On second thought, I should have expected that finding a 37-year old key blank would be "fun". Silly me!!!

Post a picture of the key. My locksmith is close to work, I can show it to him next time I pass by there and see what he thinks.

I actually have both originals sets of keys that came with the bags.

Years ago I went to various locksmiths and no one could match the keys.

Been following the various threads of the years and sometimes people say they found the right blank.

But they never tell you what it is, go figure.

I sent the pic to my locksmith, and he said he's narrowing down and asked for a picture of the other side of the key as well. Just to confirm - it's for an 81 GL1100 correct?

The fact that the bags are on an 81 GL1100 has NOTHING to do with the keys.

The keys are for Hondaline/Samsonite bags which are totally separate from the ignition key.

SnoBrdr is absolutely correct in stating
“The fact that the bags are on an 81 GL1100 has NOTHING to do with the keys.”

Perhaps I confused the issue by listing the year and model of my ride? My apologies for doing that. All I need is a source for the key blanks for the Hondaline luggage. I’ll even take a part number, or a link to somebody in the world that would be able to help. I sincerely appreciate everyone’s support. Just for grins and giggles, i’ll post pictures of my key (#431) front and back, side, top and ends tonight. ;)

You don't need to take pictures on my account, I'm sure there are better ways for you to get grins and giggles. I've gotten a lot of help on this forum and I thought I would try to return the favor, just had a hunch the locksmith I use might be able to track it down. I think instead I am complicating matters. Good luck.
