Engine not Firing up and pufs of smoke out the exhaust

Hi All

I'm busy with the restoration of a GL1000 1979. It has gone well so far, untill it came time to start the engine for the first time(since rebuild). I got farts and spits and pufs of smoke out the exhuast, but it never turned over. i checked the carbs(also rebuild) and the floats were full of feul. I tried it again and the left side exhaust started burning. Sfter the small, but irretating flames were put out, I decided to call on you guys. Can anyone please give me a differential diagnosis

Hi check that the plug lead are in there correct firing order. also check points gap. then static timing.

Hi. I have checked the firing order on the engine, but not the ignition coils. I will have a look. can you maybe tell me what to look for on the coils? Thanx

check that you have the right leads from the coils to the plugs right coil pack 1/2 left coil pack 3/4
