popping& cutting out

trying to help a friend out, he has a 1987 gl 1000 ,the problems are.
does not like to start to easily
popping just off idle speed
cuts out when put on the side stand
when its warmed up runs quite well . but still pops!!!!
any ideas???? thanks

Plugs are easy to check. You can hang a spark tester or a timing light and observe fire. On the side stand gives me the idea a float could be off, but rich problems tend to get worse as it warms up. Might not hurt to pull the breaker cover and check the points, they could certainly cause some popping.

1987 is going to be electronic, though, and not a GL1000.
