brake indicator panel light

Post by markinmi »

Just left work on my(new to me) 76 the other night. When I applied brakes a red light on my panel came on and then off when I let off the brake.I made sure it wasn't the oil light(just double checking) then it didn't come again for the rest of the ride. The manual doesn't show this Brake Indicator light.Does it mean my light blew and the emergency light thing tookover? It seems the running and brake lights were working properly for the rest of the ride.

The light "should" come on every time you use the brakes. You probably have a loose or corroded connection or the indicator bulb going out.

Is this something just on the early gl1000s? Mine just has turn signal indicators, neutral light, bright light indicator and oil light.

The 75 - 76 and I think the 77. The model years that have the reserve lighting unit have a brake light on the panel.

If it quits is it an indicator the actual brake light is faulty? I'll check the bulbs this weekend.Ive had a lot of bikes but never saw one of these before.

"The red stop lamp indicator on the console will come on every time you apply either the front or rear brake. If you apply the brakes and the red light does not illuminate you either have:

1) a burned out taillight /stop light bulb
2) a bad indicator bulb
3) Loose or corroded connector
4) a problem with the Reserve Lighting Unit

If the lamp indicator stays on the reserve lighting unit is in operation applying a lower voltage to the tail/brake lamp.

I'm guessing bad connection. Rode home last night and it worked the last couple blocks and quit again after bumping over the driveway entrance.

I agree. I would look at the bulb and socket first.

The brake dash light on my 76 never comes on. I realize I might have a burned out bulb, but could it also be because I have the bypass? I suppose I should also mention that I am running a Priority Lites turn sig module... ???

That light is handy if you just want to step on the brake enough to turn on the brake light to signal to someone behind you that there is something coming up or they are a little close.
