1978 GL 1000 - Side Covers

Post by cameron987 »

New to the forum and new to the GL1000 family.

I have a 1978 GL 1000 that is missing the side covers (right and left side // battery). I found a set online that says "Fits 75-77" -- wondering if they are different or won't fit on my '78. Does anyone know if they are the all the same?

The 78 has a different part # 83601-431-670, while the 77 is #83700-371-661 and each side has a different number.

So I can't really say, but you should be able to find a set for the 78.

Also the emblems are very different. The 77 had the decals while the 78 had a actual plastic emblem.

Information above it correct, 75-77 can share, but not 78. I think 78 and 79 can share but not sure on that.

They are a very close non-fit. The locking clip at the bottom is in a different location. The clips at the top fit perfectly. I know this because I have a set of 76 sidecovers on my 79. They do not look out of place. They fit the bike just fine. You will just have to fabricate something to hold them into place at the bottom. I like the way the earlier sidecovers look better than the later ones.

Can you post a picture of what you did so we can replicate it if needed.

Thanks.
