Hi, I just purchased a 1978 GL1000 that needs "a bit" of work. I have read several of the posts on this site and have a question about replacing the battery I noticed mention of using an aftermarket solenoid. The one that is on the bike is a bit corroded and there are a couple that were included with the bike. All the parts seem to be with the bike, though in some cases not on it.
This was a case of I had already paid half ($200) and rented the trailer and driven 60 miles to pick up the bike, and decided I could probably get the bike running again. I know I need to rebuild the carbs and replace the timing belts. Otherwise the bike is in good condition.
This is an added bike to my 03 GL1800. Something to work on and maybe give to my son. But I have not done any work on Motorcycles in maybe 40 years and that was a WWII Norton a neighbor had purchased. I am knowledgable in how to do engine work and electrical work, and a 78 Bike is more in my expertise as far as how it is put together than my 03 is.
Any help will be greatly appreciated and I will be posting my experiances in bringing this bike back to the shape it should be in as they happen.

I'm thinking you mean the starter solenoid. I would go for a new one if for no other reason than peace of mind. That one might clean up but I'm not sure I would trust it. Some of those connectors don't look too good either. JMHO

If you see anything that doesn't look right, ether clean it, fix it or change it. When I buy a used bike I take it apart to a point, it may look good from the outside but you might find trouble on the inside. Take apart and clean what you can, make sure it's ok you don't want trouble on the road.
