I have a 1978 GL1000 with a Vetter Windjammer SS fairing. Today the headlight quit working, low beam and high beam. The blue high beam indicator light was illuminated constantly, with the handlebar switch in either position. Does anyone know if this constant illumination of the blue light is a feature to alert you to a malfunctioning headlight?
My light bulb, as it turned out, was still good, but one connection point on the 3 wire light bulb plug was in bad shape. I cleaned everything up, but the plug will probably have to be replaced. At any rate, the light is working properly now.
My main interest is the possible alert feature of a constantly illuminated blue indicator light. I've never encountered this condition before, because I've never had a light bulb fail. Since I've got the headlight working again, the blue light is functioning normally.
Does anyone have an idea that might shed a little light?
Dave

Re: High Beam Indicator Light
The constant on high beam indicator could have been from the RLU kicking in thinking the low beam had failed. I don't know for sure though, I bypassed mine.

Reserve lighting units RLU fail often on these girls. Best to bypass them.

Re: High Beam Indicator Light
If you loose the ground at the headlamp, voltage will feed back from the low beam into the high beam filament lighting the dash light in either position of the switch.

I just checked the wiring diagrams, 77 was the last year for the RLU. What Virgil said kind of makes sense.
Keep your expectations tiny and you won't end up so whiny.

You're all no doubt, quite familiar with the various service manuals. The one that I have is the 1978 American Honda Motor Co. Inc. GL1000 Shop Manual. In section 17, Lights, Switches and Instruments, It gives a fairly adequate description of the RLU system on the '75,'76, and '77 models, and makes note of the fact that the '78 and '79 models deleted this feature.

Thanks. I didn't know that. Never owned one of those two years with the funny looking sheltersSolina Dave wrote: and makes note of the fact that the '78 and '79 models deleted this feature.
