GL1000 water pump sealing/gasket kit choices

Post by Ducman »

I'm looking for a water pump sealing and gasket kit for a 1976 GL1000. I prefer OE Honda parts for many reasons. Does anyone have all the Honda part numbers to make this type of kit with the gaskets, o-rings, seals, mechanical seals...

Here are two examples of the type of kit I am interested in:

Cycle-Max kit (made by K&L Supply)
http://cyclemax.com/inc/sdetail/gl1000_ ... 809/158216

And

Saber-Cycle kit
http://www.saber-cycle.com/store/product325.html

I live in Canada so I have to take into account my weak currency, shipping, General Sales Tax, duty and brokerage fees - maybe $50 extra on top of ordering either kit from the USA. So I prefer to buy from the local Honda dealership where the quality should be equal, if not better.

In the reviews for the Saber-Cycle kit, a reviewer says the o-rings are incorrectly sized, with the o-rings having a smaller than necessary cross-section.

Which kit is best? (Maybe they both have incorrectly sized O-rings...)
(FYI Honda oil filters come with 2 o-rings that have a larger diameter and are more pliable than the ones in the "Hi-Flo-Filtro" brand oil filters.)

Does anyone have all the Honda part numbers to make this type of water pump kit?

I have read on the forums and sellers websites that neither the OEM Honda water pump or the two example kits come with "the mechanical seals for the water pump".
Is this true?
How many of these are there?
What are the part numbers?
Are there any websites selling these if I can't buy from Honda?

Thanks!

Western Honda is a good place to get OEM parts from. they have a great user friendly system to look up and add what you need to a cart
been using them for years and have always been satisfied

Either use the K&L, KP or OEM. I used the KP kit on my GL1100 and it was fine.

Do NOT use Saber Cycle kits, especially for this application. First off, they are a terrible company that does not stand behind their poor quality products. Secondly, the gasket they sell for the water pump is too thin. The clearance behind the front engine cover and the shift mechanism is VERY tight, and even a few thousandths of an inch will cause the mechanism to bind on the inside of the cover. People who have tried to use the Saber Cycle kit have found that once they got things put back together, they were unable to shift the bike, because the thin Chinese gasket did not give enough clearance.

I'll stay away from sabre cycle. I'm trying to have the local Canadian Honda dealer make a water pump kit for me but it's hard to find out where all these o-rings and washers are coming from. We are looking at parts diagrams but haven't been able to identify every single washer/o-ring in the diagram and its corresponding part number yet...

You need:
1 of big O ring 91356-706-000 56 x 2.4mm
1 of small O ring 91303-282-000 37.2 x 2.3mm
3 of 6mm crush washers 90441-028-010
1 of cover gasket 11391-371-000
2 of O rings either 91302-371-003 21.0 x 2.3mm or 91312-371-003 23 x 2.1mm. These are for the outer water passages on the block. The size changes sometime in 76 so you need to check yours.
1 of O ring 91361-706-000 for the small water pump bypass ferrule
1 of O ring 91333-567-010 17 x 2.5 oil for the oil passageway.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!
