1978 gl1000 quit running
hi, and thanks for for helping if you can. I was riding dec 15 2015 in michigan getting one last ride in,after getting the cold blooded beast running i was off on my ride, 15 min into the ride the bike shut off it was like someone turned off the ignition and threw my keys over my shoulders. the bike has no power to the key at all, i did check fuses ,and wires for loose connections tho all seem good visually. the bike does still crank if you jump the solenoid but with no power to key any help sorting this out would be great .thanks smittyboy

With your test light, probe the 2red wires attached to the starter solenoid ***with the key on***.
There suppose to have battery volts on them.
One of the red wires feeds the ignition switch.
If there's no volts, unplug it and open the little trap door and replace the dog bone fuse. There is usually a spare in the door.
This is the most common cause of complete darkness.

While you re in there, I'd replace the dog bone fuse with a spade type 30 amp.smittyboy734 wrote:thanks for the tip its supposed to get warm this weekend so will bring her out and do some diagnostics
You can buy the setup for like $5 at Walmart.

Re: 1978 gl1000 quit running
yes it already has the 30 amp fuse installed so i am gonna track down the broken wire or whatever the culprit is

Ah, first thing I'd do it check all the connections at both the battery and the starter and go from there.smittyboy734 wrote:yes it already has the 30 amp fuse installed so i am gonna track down the broken wire or whatever the culprit is
I say that as those are the most obvious and easiest places to look.
All check the fuse itself.

If you have the extra cash, http://www.c5ignitions.com/ is the only way to go.smittyboy734 wrote:got the problems repaired ,after a wire connector replacement and all new main wire feed, fuse etc it is running ,i replaced the points and plugs for good measure.( i think i am gonna get electronic any thoughts out there on the conversion kits)
While it is about $600 for the setup, it includes everything you need. Module, coils, wire.
Not much more if you go Dyna and buy the coils and wires besides the ignition.
The big starts and runs better than when it was new.
Was fairly easy to install and setup.
Actually setting the timing with the C5 takes only a few minutes but you should read thru their site.
You won't regret it and Paul, the owner is great with tech support.
I had to call him 2x and he was in the shop and gave me great tips.
