I have a 79 gl1000 that has an oil leak. The leak is from a small hole in the crankcase . I have seen this hole on every other 1000 and 1100 I have looked at, but mine is the only one that leaks. What is the purpose of this hole and is there an easy fix for this leak?
?

Re: 79 GL1000
Where is it?
Could be the weep hole for the waterpump.
When the internal seal goes bad, they can drip either oil or coolant depending on which one is bad.

NO.....that hole is there to let coolant or oil out if seal is bad. If you have a water pump seal going out you need to pull the front cover and replace the seals at the very least, pump should be replaced as long as you're there but that's your call. If you plug the hole, then oil or coolant can go places it does not belong, and coolant in the wrong places can be a very bad thing.Old Guard wrote:can this hole be plugged without adverse effects?

There is no coolant leaking, only oil, so what seal would cause this?

The pump has a seal for coolant at the impeller end and a seal for oil at the rear where the drive is, my guess is because it is oil and not coolant it is the oil seal on the water pump. Pull the front cover, remove water pump and you have the choice of rebuilding the pump or replacing the pump. I just bought a factory honda pump and replaced it, pretty cheap I think, for the years you get out of it and the job it does. http://parts.southernhonda.com/p/Honda_ ... 9-681.htmlOld Guard wrote:There is no coolant leaking, only oil, so what seal would cause this?
