MPG is out of wack...

Hey guys. Have a 1975 gl1000. It supposed to get 35-40 MPG but I'm getting more like 16-20. The bike runs and sounds good. I have new air filter, spark plugs, oil and whatnot replaced. Carbs maybe need synced? Any Ideas?

Pull all 4 spark plugs.See what they look like for each cylinder.Compression test would be helpful too.

What did the plugs look like that you replaced?
Poor fuel economy is unburnt fuel going the system and not producing power..
Either from poor combustion (low compression/ poor spark)or too much fuel being delivered by one or more carbs.Spark plug condition tells much about each cylinder.

they weren't burned/black but did have a bit oil on them. I'll check em again it's been about 250 miles since I change them so if I take a look now I'll see if there is any issues.

Take pictures for us.Its easier to see than imagine.
Does your bike have points or up fitted with electronic ignition?

By the way,don't discount the air filter...If it's clogged up..
