Starter cylenoid issue

Bought a 1976 honda gl 1000 and the guy told me it needed battery and tires. I bought a new battery, hooked it up, started it and had it running for about a minute and it stalled. So I did that a couple times. Tried again and I heard a tick tick noise when I presses the start button. Took the bat cover off and the negative receptacle was melted. Got a new batery and it is still doing the tick noise when I press the start. Took the cylonoid off , cleaned it and it still ticking. Not taking the power to the starter? Do I need a new cylonoid? I also hooked bat straight up to starter and it tried to start. Ahhhhhh
