Regulator/Rectifier

Based on Canadian dollars, and shopping on Ebay, I can purchase a regulator/rectifier from a low price of $21 to a high of $200 (all-in).
My question is: Which one would you buy, and why? I see that one is nearly 10 times more expensive than the other.

That's a lot of money!..................Dave

Dave, I've worked in the electronics field for 35 years and one thing I can tell you, "You get what you pay for" and this applies to electronics more so than any other piece of equipment. There are many ways in electronic equipment to where cost can be cut, and those cuts can be costly down the road. It may last for years or it may fail right out of the box.

First of all, does the seller guarantee their equipment and what is their replacement guarantee. When I had my 84 Yamaha Venture Royal I had to replace both the stator and regulator/rectifier, I bought them from Ricks Motorsport Electric here is their web site for your bike; https://ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/results/

Thank you for that sir. (wish I knew your name) With that many years dealing with electronics, if anyone would know, one would suppose, you would know.
I was in touch with Rick's Motorsport Electrics yesterday and was told that the body of electronics, to their specs., was made in Taiwan, and the harness and connectors are assembled and added in the U.S.
I don't doubt that their units are likely top-of-the-line, but I'm wondering if installing a much less expensive reg/rect wouldn't be worth the chance. If it worked, great, and if it failed, go to plan "B". What have you lost, 20 bucks?
To be honest, I'd probably go with the more expensive one. I'm just not sure why exactly.

If you're looking at aftermarket for your a four-cylinder wing, you really can't go wrong with a Shindengen regulator/rectifier. They're excellent quality, and have a great reputation amongst bike owners. They are a bit more expensive than others...but again, you get what you pay for.

Dave, my name it Terry, one other thing you will want to check it the connector that plugs the stator to the regulator/rectifier, these can (most often) get corroded and as a result they heat up and melt. Most people that have this type of setup (external regulator/rectifier) just remove the plug and solder the the stator wires to the regulator/rectifier wires.

However you decide to go, make sure that you ground the R/R to ground. Stock OEM ones (especially the GL1000 models) need to be grounded to ensure proper battery charging.

Dave, your GL1000 has separate regulator and rectifier. It's a very worthwhile mod to ditch this sytem and go for a later combined unit.

I bought 2 Honda units on Ebay. The first one was supposedly NOS but it was obviously used and bad when it arrived and I was refunded the money. The second one was advertised as used and worked.
