1 part needed!

Post by BSArider »

Help! I am one caliper mounting shim away from having working front brakes on my 78 GL1000. Nobody sells a new one that I can find and I don't know of any used parts vendors that might have one. Anybody got a spare or a line on a new one?? Please PM me if you can help.
Thanks

Are you talking about the pad shims?

Yes, the shims that mount to the caliper support that the ends of the pads ride on. I was thinking of trying to make one from stainless sheet stock but that stuff is a bear to work with.

I assume you are referring to part # 45116-371-006 SHIM B, PAD which as you note is not available.

Have you checked ebay for the entire caliber which might have the part.

My first thought was to go to the dealer and see if a tech had one laying around but then I remembered that most dealers will not work on any bike more than 10 years old.

Hopefully one of the restorers on this site will have the part or be able to tell you where to go to get it.

Unless you find it on ebay or a For Sale section, you won't find it.

I probably have some in my parts cache but I can't check till tomorrow at the earliest as it's cold/dark out there.

If it sets your mind at rest, I have had one missing on my '75 1000 for 5 years and I have never had a moments problem with the brakes.

That part IS there for a reason. It is very smooth in comparison to the relatively rough casting of the caliper. It is also much, much harder steel than the caliper, which is relatively soft. The pads slide back and forth across it every time you apply and release the brakes, so without that shim in place you will a) wear your calipers out and then have to replace the caliper, and b) get to the point where the pads will not move correctly, and will bind - either wearing unevenly or sticking entirely.

Well now there's confusion.

Is he looking for part # 45114-371-006 or part # 45112410006 ?

Apologies. My mistake. I read the word "shim" and assumed we were referring to the shims that clip on the back of the pads. Ignore my previous comment as it has no relevance to the "shim" being sought.
