Waterfall of gas and weak spark

Post by mars395 »

Just picked up a beautiful 77 gl1000. Low miles but not running. Fresh gas, fresh charge on the battery. Plugs were beyond fouled so cleaned them up and regapped them. Motor was turning over just fine but could tell it was flooding right away even with no throttle. Sure enough, more gasoline than could ever make it through twice as many carbs start pouring out both exhausts.
On top of that, tested spark to each plug and the spark looks weak to me. Gonna get a second opinion or compare it to the spark I get from my 1100.
Reaching out for any guidance. Gonna open up those carbs probably and see if I can find anything obvious and have rebuild kits on hand.
And begin.

Probably stuck floats - and sediment every where - if you are confident - take the carbs off - no need to separate them - just do one at a time - strip and clean them. Then some fresh fuel from a clean container and hooked up on the bench to see if they flood or overflow before you put them back on the bike.

Weak spark can be a sign of a bad earth - I would suggest clipping maybe a 1/4" off the end of each plug wire and re terminating on both ends of each plug wire and lead to the coils. Probably nice green copper wire is your problem. Check the earthing for the coils as well.

Before you try to start it again, clean out the gas tank!
It probably has a lot of rust and sediment. You'll just end
up sucking that crap into your carbs and plugging them
up again.

I was surprised by the volume of fuel! I have experienced stuck floats before and have never seen so much come out all at once. Wouldn't be surprised is all four are stuck wide open.
