Several months ago I purchased (cheep) a, 1978 GL1000 wing, 37,000 miles. I have rebuilt the carbs and have it on the road with several new parts added. It runs great! It's getting 29/30 miles per gallon.
What should the gas mileage be for this bike? I feel like it uses more than it should as well as it smells a bit gassy! It has not yet been synced since the carb rebuild.
Thanks!

Best I've ever gotten on a long haul is 40.

Re: 1978 GL1000 gas mileage
I keep accurate records of my fuel consumption, and I average 50 mpg on my '78 up here in Canada. If a U.S. gallon is only 80% of an imperial gallon, then that would be 40 mpg. stateside. You'll need to investigate further, to improve your gas mileage, if you're only getting 30 mpg. From what I'm seeing, in responses to your inquiry, it would appear that 40 mpg. is pretty consistent with GL1000s. in the U.S. where you're riding.
Good luck...............Dave

I was wondering about this myself. I just picked up a 79 GL1000 project bike. I was curious about what the gas mileage was going to be.

With much respect I would say: first sync your carbs, and then start fine tunning the motor. It doesn't make much sense to worry about MPG on that condition.rduling wrote: What should the gas mileage be for this bike? I feel like it uses more than it should as well as it smells a bit gassy! That is what I got on mine. Have to remember these bikes were built before people were gas mileage conscience.smittyboy734 wrote:i get 38 to 40 on my 78
