76 gl1000 wont turn over

Post by owl76 »

hi.
my 76 gl1000 has been setting for a couple years. i just rebuilt the carbs and put a new battery in it, but it wont turn the starter.
keys on, i have headlight and neutral light, 30 amp fuse link is good. when i hit the stater button the neutral light dims and the headlight goes out but i get nothing (not even clicking) from the starter. i shorted the starter to the pos cable and it then turns over slowly so i guess its not the starter.

any ideas? thanks

Check your grounds.

Clean them up.

Is the battery fully charged?

You said it turns over slowly at the solenoid, should be fast enough to start the bike.

You did clean the main ground at the motor mount.

just went out and jumped the solenoid and it turns over fine that way, but still nothing from the start button.

with my 78 if it is not in neutral all the way it will not turn over, even the littlest bit on the shifter will do this even when the tire rolls freely
