I'm rebuilding the carbs on my 76 gl1000 and on 2 of the carbs there are 2 o-rings under the carb pistons and 2 are i presume missing. all of the carb kits i found don't include this o-ring. where can i find them?

Re: missing o ring
The part number is 16010-371-004 which show up as part of a gasket set from Partzilla. $46 though! Might be easier to find some used ones.

Just found the same from David Silver for £10 here in the UK.

Yes they should be in each carb. They are called a damper ring and the slide piston sits on it at rest. It will run without them but the idle mixtures will be upset.
