Hi,
The cylinder heads of my '76 GL1000 have been rebuilt at a machine shop, and now I'm puzzled as to which head is the left, and which is the right.
The only differences I could find were:
1. some markings on the bottom of each head. Both have the letters 'ZL', but one head also has marking that say "3 KR", while the other has "4 KR";
2. there is some residue of the rubber seals at 3 of the 4 'holes' where the camshafts exit the head, making me suspect that the clean one is where the fuel pump was, since that hole doesn't have such a gasket. That would make that the right hand head.
Am I missing something really obvious? Even if the heads are identical, I imagine it is of importance to match the camshaft and head as they were.
Thanks!

The fuel pump is a solid clue. I would go with that since I have not heard they are identical. So since I too am not sure, go with the clue.

They are identical - looking at the parts manual, the left and right head assemblies have the same part numbers.
That said, I'm with you - I would match them to the way they were, as they've been spending almost 40 years seating into one another.

Re: Differences left/right cylinder heads?
The camshafts are the clue, I had heads machined without removing cams, so the fuel pump drive and ignition point drive were a dead giveaway. But if the cams were removed, since same part number both heads either cam should fit either head. So best guess at that point....

Alright, I'll go with the fuel pump clue.
