I bought a 1978 gold wing and I had to replace the starter due to the insides being scrambled up. Now when Cranking motor, the positive battery cable gets very hot. I’ve been reading and might head in the direction of checking wiring for corroded wires. Any other direction I should be checking? Just going over bike to see what needs attention. Thanks, Dave.

Sounds like the starter motor is still a problem, and or the cables are internally corroded.

Sure... Go to Randakks cycle shack and read the Starting a Honda GL1000 after a long lay up. Read all the way through and read the posts and re read it again. Plenty of info there and lots of info here also.

As far as the starter cable getting hot, since info is limited to your problem, bad grounds (yes more than one) and all connections corroded is a good way to think on this. Was this a new starter you put on that was getting hot and is battery good and had a charge and a load test? Did you hold the starter button down for more then 10 seconds. You are on the right route ,cleaning all connections. Just wandering if the engine was running before all this or is this your first start up. Hope this helps... The gl1000 drivers will be along to help I am sure.

Presumably the replacement starter was used.... Check the brushes, in these motors when the brushes are nearing end of life the starter motor will drag, and pulls an awful lot of current.

Thank you. I will look into it. I’m just average on the mechanical side of working on bikes.
