Old 77 wing for parts
Was a kick start available on a 1977 wing? I have a chance to buy a full dress 77 wing for $200 thats been sitting for close to 10 years an would make a good parts bike. I want to turn the engine over but not by jump starting. I'm afraid of either hydrolock or bad valve timing and doing engine damage. Its got lots of good parts.

Yes. The 1977 model has a kick start feature. The lever is under the right side shelter cover and plugs into a receptacle on the left side of the engine.
You could probably put a rod or pry bar in the receptacle if the kick lever is not there just to turn it over.

The handle from a small trolley jack works well.badandy wrote: ↑Sun Mar 25, 2018 4:53 am Yes. The 1977 model has a kick start feature. The lever is under the right side shelter cover and plugs into a receptacle on the left side of the engine.

They are not easy to turn over using the kick starter lever if tight from sitting. The bolt on the stator or under the belt cover might be an alternative.

If you can put it on the center stand, put it in 5th gear and rotate the rear wheel. Pull the plugs if you suspect hydrolock.

Passed on the wing,it's frozen solid. I tried an tried an could not turn it over. I could get a small profit out of it but not worth all the work. Even the carbs would need a complete overhaul. One guy I contacted wanted $450 plus shipping for a rebuild, for $550 total. Too much.

I have freed up several "stiff from sitting" engines filling the cylinders with diesel fuel and letting it sit. Unless its been sitting outside and uncovered the chances are pretty good you can free it up. Usually light rust on the rings and cylinders are holding it. It may even be hydro locked from fuel leaking into the cylinders. Plugs would have to be pulled.
You could get $200 out of the carbs as is and recoup the purchase price.
