kick starter

When did Honda remove the kick starter from the GL1000? Was it 77 or 78?

1977 was the last year. A 1978 engine block was new that year and the kick starter was gone. It can be added back in by usage of the 1977 cover.

Then either your engine was changed or you didn't have a 78.

Unless someone added it.

Kick starters are dangerous anyway. The only time I have ever tried to start my 76 with the kick starter was once when the battery died. It started on the very first attempt. I was so startled that I jumped back, tripped over the front wheel of my 1500 and landed on my butt. Not sure what I was expecting. LOL. True story.

thanks for the confirmation on the engine year. I bought the engine because it had about 170 lbs. compression on each cylinder, but the rebuilt carbs that are going on it are from a '76 and I understand that the cam grind is milder on the '78 engines so will that be a problem? If so , I have '76 cylinder heads that are good and I could swap the heads or could I just change the cams and rockers? One more question, will a dyna coil electronic ignition from a "76 fit the breaker point housing on a '78?
All my Goldwing experience has been on '76 models.
