Can Comstar wheels be put on a 1975 GL1000?

Post by ntintruder » Sun Apr 29, 2018 8:10 pm

I posted a question awhile back about an alleged 1975 GL1000 that has Comstar wheels. I had not yet seen the frame number because of a Vetter fairing and numerous after market lights and accessories in the way. Someone suggested that the bike was not a 1975 but after removing the fairing I found the frame number which, according to Randakk puts it right in the middle of the numbers found on 1975 GLs so I am wondering if there were kits sold that enabled the Comstars to be put on earlier model bikes? I believe that Comstar wheels weren't around until 1977 or maybe 1978.

They started in 78.

Here's info from another forum on your question.

Here's a list of what you'll need if you want to put a 78-79 comstar on a 75-77 Wing:
78-79 forks or fork lowers
78-79 front brake caliper brackets (the 75-77 calipers will bolt right up)
78-79 front brake rotors
78-79 speedo drive/gearbox retainer
78-79 front fender (purely for looks, the lead for the speedo cable is on the other side).

It is certainly a workable solution if you have a donor bike for the parts.
