I'm working on a GL1000 project and recently got every thing ready to start the bike.
The engine runs fine, however I noticed that after about a minute of running the left valve cover becomes warm and the exhaust becomes so hot that it cannot be touched even the end of the exhaust is warm. The right side still feels cold at that moment.
I've noticed that there is smoke comming from the left exhaust which originates from cylinder 2.
Does anyone have an idea what this could possibly be?

Re: GL1000 running hot on left side
You'd be surprised how well a wing will run on 2 cylinders.
Keep in mind that this bike "runs" from 185° to 205° and the exhaust headers well above 400°.
Address the cold side first...
Spark..fuel..compression...
All in the correct amount and order...
Which one is wrong?
From a cold engine start..idle for 8 seconds...shut it down and lightly tap each header .The cold one is a dead cylinder.Isolate spark..compression then fuel..Also verify spark plug wire placement(crossed wire?).

Re: GL1000 running hot on left side
I am indeed supprised how well she runs on 2 cylinders.
Removed the wires from the from the left side and started her up on the two colder cylinders. Required a bit of choke but she kept running on the two right cylinders.
Did the same on the left, also kept running on those two but a little bit more irregular.
I don't think that the bike will keep running on 1 cylinder so I think all cylinders work as they should.
Running on all 4, the engine sometimes runs very smooth and when I use a little throttle it becomes irregular. And after a while the left side starts giving out a bit of white smoke.
Have to say that the fuel is over a year old, which could also be a factor

It sounds like it has a good heartbeat. Now take on the carbs to feed it properly.Assuming the compression is good on all 4.
Clean and sync them goes a long way.
It should fire equally on all 4 at 8-900 rpm .I'd first start with some fresh gas..Get all the old stuff out of the tank and carbs..Add a bit of Seafoam to help clean it up..

I've rebuild the carbs a while back and recently synchronized them. But it keeps getting high revs stationary.
Will try new fuel first and if that doesn't work check the carbs again.

Re: GL1000 running hot on left side
If the revs keep rising when idling, that could indicate an inlet air leak. This would also cause hot running, as the affected cylinders would be running lean. Try spraying easy start spray (or an unlit propane torch) around all the carb/inlet manifold joints. If the revs rise when you hit a particular spot, that's where you have a leak.

Re: GL1000 running hot on left side
I put in some new fuel and took another look at the carbs.
Reinstalled them and made sure everything was air tight.
Started the bike and it was running quite good around 1000 rpm. After a while it suddenly increased to 3000 / 4000 rpm and there is no way to get the rpms down. And a lot of smoke coming from the right exhaust
