Anyone know if it's possible to put a kick start on a 79 GL1000? I know it was on the 75, maybe some 76's.

All 75/77 have the kick starter. I haven't seen this done but others say you can install the kicker mechanism along with the rear cover from a 75/77 on the 78/79.

Well it seems to be a lot of work for the outcome. You will have to pull the engine. Hardly anyone has ever used the kick starter anyway.

I've tried mine twice.... Mainly for the novelty factor, to show people who didn't realise such a thing existed on a 'Wing! It's not comfortable to use, is very low-geared and feels quite agricultural! It did start the bike though!

I got pulling the engine down, I switch a 79 and 81 in and out, 5 to 6 hrs.
I think it's almost time to put the 81 1100 back in, and while I had the 79 out, figured I'd play a bit. As you say, novelty. My bike is a novelty. In NC winter, I cut big hard plastic dog-biscuit bottles around the mirrors and hand controls, painted black, made great hand protectors. Highway pegs on crash bars absolutly suck, I got a matching set of vicegrips on each side of frame. next to radiator, above height of front belt covers, perfect height, comfortable. Of course, one they were attached, I hung lights on them. One VW carb. Basically a VW with two wheels. cruise at 75 to 80, comfortable. Been back and forth to NC, about 890 miles door to door. (New Bern) 14 to 15 hrs, 6 times so far. Definitely a novelty.
