Timing belt

Post by gwlegg » Sat Nov 24, 2018 12:49 pm

Hi guys. The fleeting idea has passed me by the head, to replace the timing belt by chains in my old GL1000. Has anyone done an experiment about it? Thank you

That would be asking for a problem you don't have. How would you provide oil to the chains? There are 2 belts by the way. Just replace them every 5 years and don't worry about it.

Not to mention the original cams aren't designed for the power pulses the chains would impart, that the belts absorb. The engineers take that kind of thing into account. You'd need a continuous lubrication system, tensioners...not saying it's not possible, but it's a whole lot of work for very little additional return.
