Hello all you happy people. New member here, coming to you from the CB750C and CB1100F sites. I'm picking up a 1976 GL1000 this weekend -snow permitting- and wanted to say howdy. This will be my first Wing, second Honda. Been a Yamaha-er most of my life, all two-strokes but for an 83 Venture I resurrected from the rusties, and a 17 TW200 I just can't get into riding. I got into Honda a year ago with the purchase of an 81 CB750 Custom. I've spent some money getting it right (waiting for the head, cylinder and new pistons to come back from Mike Nixon in AZ as we speak) but I've also become intrigued by these early naked Wings. This one shows a little over 60k on the clocks, so hopefully it won't need a complete teardown immediately. We shall see.

Hi from the UK and welcome. 60k is nothing for one of these. My '75 GL1000 has 83k on it and still runs and rides really nice. Loads of help and friendly knowledgeable people here. Enjoy and don't be afraid to ask. Oh yeah... Pictures....we luv'em!

Looks like somebody loved it, you will too. Not a fan of the seat, but lots of ways to fix that. Let us know when you get the belts changed, that is always to be done first since these are interference engines. When a belt goes south, so do the valves and pistons.

Right said, Fred :mrgreen: Belts already in the works. This is a non-runner due to a lack of keys, and I'm about to turn 61 so no burning desire to try to get this on the road asap. I'll leave that to the youngsters. There's lots to check before I even try to turn the motor over by hand. I learned the hard way not to rush these old gals. So locating a key or rekeying is first up, then belts, then get to know the bike intimately as I go along. I know the exhaust is toast, but that can come later; I'll keep an eye on ebay. Also the handlebars don't look original, so I'll look into that. I'm stoked.

If you look at the helmet lock I think you'll find a three or four digit number stamped right by where the key goes in. Take those numbers to a good locksmith, that's the code for the tumblers, and they should be able to grind you a good working key from that code.

Nice. Looks fairly well cared for. Not sure if I like the repaint or not. That is the first green one that I've seen.
Good luck with bringing it back to life.
I also have a '76. Mine was originally red, but some owner long before me repainted it in the dark blue paint scheme
of a '78, complete with factory looking stripes.

The green is what got my attention. Won't really know anything till I pick it up, which should be tomorrow. We've had snow and sleet off and on most of the day, not much but enough to make things slippery 5 miles from pavement in the mountains. The trailer is hooked up and the TW I'm delivering loaded and strapped down, hopefully no issues in the morning. Bike is in Albuquerque, about 5 hours away. Fingers crossed.

Safely retrieved the new Wing and got it home. Well, almost. It's sitting at the bottom of the hill about a hundred yards from the hose - won't warm up out of the 20s to melt the ice on my steep driveway. I really want to get it out of the weather so I can get some key numbers. The gas tank has a lot of something in it and I want that out of there.

The guy I got it from said it was REALLY heavy but I was thinking that the manual says around 600 lbs, lighter than my V-Rod. Didn't want to roll is what he based that on; left front brake was stuck. Once we removed that he was like "hey! This isn't as heavy as I thought!" I knew brakes were well up the list for being addressed so no big.

The title has the previous-previous owner on it and I was able to track him down. He told me he put 1100 carbs on it and it ran great before he traded it for a 924 Porsche. He ALSO told me that guy (a trailer dealer) didn't do anything with it and left it sitting outside the dealership for the last 2 years. Whoops, wish I had THAT info before I bought it, gonna have to go over everything closer. Gas tank may be full of water for all I know.

PPO said he had the motor out for whatever reason and put new belts on it, but that's probably been 3 or 4 years now so will just buy new ones. So yeah, lots to keep me busy.
