VIN location on a 1976 GL 1000 Goldwing

Post by Slowride65 » Tue Mar 12, 2019 9:38 am

:)  hi everyone Slowride65 here. I am needing some help trying to find out the year of a 76' Goldwing I think. The story of this fine bike is that it is a one owner bike whose owner just passed away. His widow doesn't know much about it since she is wife #2. She has said that her husband always said it was a special bike, one of the first ever made. My research has told me that it I'd quite possible ,it has a Full Vetter Fairing from the front all the way back to the saddlebags and tourpack. My problem is his widow had been unable to find the paperwork on the bike but know he has risen it in most of the years she had know him until he got sick. Anybody who can help me out or any suggestions on getting her running all will be appreciated. Thanks and keep the rubber on the ground. Slowride65

Look on the left side of the steering head.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me so quick. I found a vin number, one on the left side of the neck and one on the right side of the neck. I eat her a video on the subject and it said the one on the left would be the vin for the frame.,when it was made. It also said that to find out what year the bike was made to look for a number on the left side of the frame (which I did not find) and look behind the carburetors for a number to see when the bike was built. I haven't got that far. It also said the 10th digit would designate the year. What didget would tell what production number? I believe this bike was one of the first 250 built but not sure. As I said before, I'm not going to go too far but would like to find out for sure, just because her husband was so adamant about it being a special bike
I will post pictures tonight and possibly put it for sale then
Thanks Slowride65

You can't tell the year of the bike without a real VIN.

The carb number might or might not mean anything. Different years had different # carbs but people switch them all the time.

If you do find the #, contact http://www.oldwings.com/first200.html

He has been documenting the first 200 bikes ever built.

Not sure why you think this was one of the first 250 made?

They started making Goldwings in 1975, so yours is the second year of production.
I'd hardly call that "one of the first ever made".
I have a '76 myself. Nice bike, but it can't hold a candle to my 99 1500.

The tag on the left side should have the year model & production date on it. 1980 was the first year the year model was included in the VIN, when they started putting 17 digit serial # on vehicles and not all of them even then. The # on the engine is better explained here; http://www.randakksblog.com/gl1000-vin- ... explained/

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

( Seriously, you haven't read all 115 pages of my http://www.wingovations.com website ?? )
