As can be seen from the picture of my bike (attached), it has a rack on the top of the dummy fuel tank. I have seen some GL1000 pictures with the same rack. My question is:
Was this a GL1000 Honda approved accessory that was factory fitted or was it put on by an owner as an aftermarket item.
I would like to have my GL1000 looking original and, if this rack is not original, then I will remove it and have the 3-piece dummy tank resprayed.
Dummy Tank Carrier/Bag Rack
Re: Dummy Tank Carrier/Bag Rack
I'm no Goldwing expert, I'm learning as I go with my '76 GL. While cleaning mine up (sitting since 1985), I removed the rack from the lid, and on closer inspection saw a sticker on the front right post. AMCO, West Hollywood, CA. I dug into the web and found the company AMCO made chrome racks for motorcycles, cars and trucks! I found some vintage ads, with the variety of offerings. Kinda cool!
I work for Honda now, have for 5 years in the Automobile division, and like most manufacturers, Honda does an enormous amount of accessory engineering, finally shopping the design to vendors for "who can" to Honda's quality, and "how much."
The AMCO rack could be something American Honda provided as a dealer-install accessory, or, not? I certainly can't say. But the one on my bike was installed right, the chrome has withstood time (unlike some other chrome on the bike), which makes me further believe that the rack is a genuine Honda accessory. The mount bolts have a 7/16" hex head.
Anyway...I'm keeping mine. It's something different.

Probably the biggest reason that the chrome has survived is that you live in Calif.apex wrote: ↑Tue Jul 02, 2019 12:00 am I'm no Goldwing expert, I'm learning as I go with my '76 GL. My 76 has one just like yours. Also still perfect chrome. I use it to mount a tank bag when touring.
