Exhaust Silencers
Exhaust Silencers
I removed the original exhaust silencer(s) from my GL1000 and, when I rotated it to set it down on my workbench, there was a rattle of lose metal from inside. Obviously, something has become detached inside. Now, is it possible to ‘unzip’ the silencer, reattach the lose component and then have the outer skin rewelded ?
Has anyone had this problem before ?

Re: Exhaust Silencers
The internal baffles have probably rusted out. I suppose it would be possible to cut the silencers open and then re-weld them, but awkward and expensive. You could fit aftermarket ones, which would not look original or, for quite a bit of money (£800 ish), David Silver supplies excellent quality stainless copies of the originals.

I used Emgo reverse megaphones on my 79. No comparison to stick obviously, but still a very pleasing appearance, like they belonged on there.
Slightly louder than stock, sounds it bit like an older sports car.
$52 each, not a bad deal.

You can often get them for free or at the most, $50 for the pair.
A single adaptor and they bolt right on.

Re: Exhaust Silencers
My 77 stock muffler has had an occasional, intermittent rattle at certain rpms for decades. Hasn’t gotten any worse or affected anything. I don’t think you can beat the looks or sound of stock exhaust.

Right but try to find a set.
For some models, they don't exist new.

Re: Exhaust Silencers
As I posted previously, the early black horseshoe ones are being re-manufactured by another company to very high standards, but a bit 'spendy'. Having said that, if my original '75 ones ever need replacing, I'll find the money.

I found a set for my 78 on the West Coast, California.
They are like brand new and were under $200.
I presently have HDs on but could easily put the OEMs on in a heartbeat.
In this part of the USA, unless you have a climate-controlled garage, they don't stand a chance.

I hear what you're saying. You know what the weather in England is like! I remove mine every year, rub them down and repaint them with wood stove paint. Still on the originals but some day I'll have to take the expensive route.

Re: Exhaust Silencers
Nothing to paint on mine but I used to give them a good cleaning and applied a heavy coat of chrome polish, which I then took off, before putting the bike away for the winter. I usually try to ride all 12 months unless there is actual ice on the road.
