Hey guys, so if you remember me from previous posts,
I have 76 Wing that had high idle hang-ups and intermittent engine stalls.
It turns out, the dog-bone fuse was too old causing stalls and vacuum ports were not sealed properly and it was getting false air causing the bike to hang up if I set the idle speed anything above 1000 RPMs.
Now I have fixed that issue by replacing the dog-bone fuse, re-adjusting the idle mixture, giving a really good sync with DigiSync tool and properly sealing the vacuum ports.
I originally had the idle mixture screws at 2.5 turns out, but I noticed the RPM dropping too fast and dipping below 500 RPMs, so I set the screws at 2 turns out.
Now the RPM drops to idle at a reasonable response speed, and I had the idle RPM set at 950 RPM.
But I noticed it dying at idle if I didn't give it a good rev at stop lights.
So I increased the idle to about 1200 RPMs when running at operating temperature.
Now the bike doesn't die at stop lights, and now the vacuum ports have been properly sealed, I no longer get false air that causes the bike to hang up, and I feel like 1200 RPM idle doesn't really mess with shifting either.
But it is quite a bit off from the specs specified in the manual and I was wondering if (from you guys's anecdotal experiences) it is acceptable to have it idle +26% than spec idle settings.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
P.S
Also, I have noticed one of the carbs going out of sync after a few weeks of riding. Is this pretty normal? It's usually the #2 carb that goes out of sync

It sounds like your idle circuits are needing attention, probably the internal seals too. Assuming you have the correct 758 '76 carbs, idle screw is 2 turns out. But if the carbs have been swapped out that may not be correct (755 only need 1 1/3). Idle speed should be 950 - 1000.
'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

Thanks for the response.Old Fogey wrote: ↑Sun Sep 01, 2019 3:20 am It sounds like your idle circuits are needing attention, probably the internal seals too. How will I be able to check whether they have been swapped or not?
Although I dont think this is the case as even 2 turns out feel a little bit too lean

On the carb mounting flange where it bolts to the plenum there will be a stamped number 758A, 755A etc.

Once the sync is set on a properly cleaned and tuned set of carbs the sync should not change at all. I also think your carbs need more attention.

Han, one of my GLs came to me with 1100 carbs on it. Being new to the GL world if someone hadn't pointed it out, I would have chased issues for a while before figuring out the deal. Unless you're sure, a quick pic post here will let us see what you have installed. Just a thought.
