Stator question

Post by Wirelic » Tue Oct 01, 2019 8:03 am

Hi All,

As some of you may know, I’m restoring a 78 GL1000 (see separate topic about that). It has 50,000 miles on it. One thing I’d like to do is install heated grips. Also maybe a auxiliary port for phone charging, etc. I’ve read that the original stator is marginal in output, so my question is: do you think I should upgrade the stator? Should I replace it anyway since the bike is almost 42 years old with 50,000 miles on it?
Does anyone have a recommendation as to which stator would be a good replacement?
Thank you for all your help.

From what I understand the GL 1000 and 1100 use the same stator, they are not powerhouses to be sure, but are far from marginal. Should easily power heated grips and a phone charger. You might want to switch the grips "off" if you are in stop/go traffic. You will likely be drawing some from the battery at idle. Off idle you'll have plenty of power.

I wouldn't replace stator unless it has failed. Be sure the connector in the stator wires has been replaced with soldered joints, and inspect the connector to the rectifier where the stator wires go....

Thanks for your reply. Appreciate your wisdom. That’s all good new. I didn’t really want to replace the stator unless absolutely necessary. The areas I travel in are fairly devoid of stop & go traffic, so I’m not worried about that.

I’ve already checked that stator connection, of course the connector was burnt thru. I will be soldering those wires. And some other electrical repairs.

Thanks again!
