gday guys.
ive got a 75 gl1000 with rythmic clicking from the transmission region whenever the shaft is turned. ujoint is ok, driveshaft is ok, when the wheel and shafts are out, the clicking still happens when the shaft rod bit is turned. a mechanic said is probably bearings in the transmission or broken gears.
how difficult is it to pull out a GL transmission? im moderately mechanical able, ive done a few top end rebuilds but only on 1 and 2 cylinder bikes. ive never pulled a transmission. there are used gears sets on ebay.
any advice/tips/experiences? or is this kind of thing best left to experts. im not paying to have it done so i need to know if its worth doing, or am i better selling it cheap to someone else.
thanks!
has anybody replaced transmission gears in a gl1000?

Unlike most motorcycles, in the Goldwing, the transmission is part of the engine. Well...it's in the engine case. The transmission lives in the space below the engine crank.jtcr85@gmail.com wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2019 1:41 am gday guys.

In order to get at the gears of the transmission, you have to split the engine case, remove the pistons, crankshaft, etc....basically tear down the entire engine. It's not for the faint of heart. One of the toughest things is crankshaft (smooth) bearings - they are very specific to a bike, and are not available anymore.
Before getting into that, you might want to do a bit more investigation to try to zero in on the source of the clicking. A mechanic's stethoscope might help.

he makes it look very easy. the honda manual makes it look very hard-and the pictures are terrible.

far easier to just find a new-to-you engine
$400 https://www.ebay.com/itm/372679675122
$500 https://www.ebay.com/itm/293196694063
$400 https://www.ebay.com/itm/233070829595
$500 guaranteed running https://www.ebay.com/itm/293179873490
$200 bottom end only , so there is your transmission with a LOT of work involved
https://www.ebay.com/itm/272112289691
I would stick with a complete running motor.

i made those videos and while an engine rebuild can be a little daunting, it's not impossible. but i
seriously doubt the clicking you hear is in the gearbox. these things are built tough, very tough. in fact i have never heard of anyone changing or needing to change gearbox bearings.
not saying it hasnt been done, mind.
in fact every now and again my blue 75 has a clicking from the rear , i hear occasionally. i have no idea what it is and i don't worry about it. if it has good quality oils in it, just ride it. engine pulldown can get very pricey
final drive maybe ? there is a service bulletin i have seen about the clicking reardrive . i will try to find it
oddly, my 76 LTDs do not make the click sound.. hmm
you can give me a call if you like on 0407744019. cheers, Maurice

Sorry haven’t logged in for a while, but I’m about as far from xantipippe as I could be-in tassie!
The new engine sounds like a great idea also, thanks,
However, I’ve solved the issue.....
After all that it was just a $19 bearing that rotates around the driveshaft as it exits the rear case. Didn’t need to split the engine or anything!!! Just took of a few small rear cases.
It was a Incredible wave of relief!
Something to remember and pass on if you encounter a similar noise, and jumping of the rear cog through the panel under the fuel tank!
