I have an oil leak that seems to have happened when the bike was sitting for the past two years. So I decided to pull the water pump cover off since it looks like someone was in there with a new gasket. I get it all apart and find this seal that looks melted. Well problem solved probably. But why did the seal melt?
Oil pump failure? Can I pull the oil pump at this point? I know there is a chain on the other side. Will the chain stay in place?

You can't melt an oil seal. That looks like somebody gooped a leaky seal with silicone. Just replace it, nothing will fall out.

I don't know what all the stuff on there is, but it sure isn't supposed to be there. It should look like this:

The old seal just pries out:

The new one presses in place:

Yeah I figured out that seal didn't belong. It cracked the oil pump housing. New housing and then I broke a bolt for the oil pump. Three days later and new helicoil threads it's back in. Just waiting on the gasket for the back of the pump now and I can get it closed back up. Dropped in a new water pump while I was at it too.
